On Monday, the Trump administration started taking it all away after the Supreme Court cleared the path for them last month.<\/p>\n

The Court sided with the administration\u2019s move to strip Haitian immigrants like Larrieux of their Temporary Protected Status \u2014 the lawful protection that had let the 47-year-old live and work in the U.S. legally. Overnight, she told MS NOW, the American dream she\u2019d built turned into \u201ca nightmare.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe idea of [the] United States, the \u2018land of opportunity for all\u2019 \u2014 is it really for all?\u201d Larrieux said.<\/p>\n

She is one of an estimated 1.8 million immigrants the Trump administration has stripped of lawful status since the start of President Donald Trump\u2019s second term, according to an MS NOW analysis of figures compiled by immigration advocacy groups and data publicly posted by the Department of Homeland Security.\u00a0<\/p>\n

That total goes well beyond TPS holders. It also includes immigrants who received parole status through a Biden-era app known as CBP One, and a separate program for Cubans, Haitians, Nicaraguans and Venezuelans. The figure is likely an undercount, immigration lawyers and advocates say, because it assumes overlap between TPS holders and people with certain parole status.\u00a0<\/p>\n

They are people who built their lives through legal channels \u2014 health care workers, hospitality workers, small-business owners \u2014 and who now face return to countries some say they will not survive. One Haitian immigrant, Maryse, told MS NOW she would be going back to a \u201cwar zone.\u201d Another, Vilbrun, came to the U.S. thinking he \u201chad nothing to fear because I\u2019m not a criminal.\u201d The prospect of returning to Haiti is dire, he said: \u201cI know I would die\u201d if forced to return. Both asked only to be identified by their first names, out of a fear that they would be targeted.<\/p>\n

The State Department designates Haiti as a \u201cLevel 4 \u2013 Do Not Travel\u201d country, the riskiest classification. A travel advisory issued July 10 warns of kidnapping, terrorism and violent crime it describes as \u201crampant.\u201d<\/p>\n

Immigration lawyers describe a deliberate effort to strip legal status at scale. \u201cThey take people who are lawfully here and they remove that lawful status \u2014 that\u2019s what you see across the board,\u201d said David Leopold, an immigration lawyer in Ohio. The administration is also blocking people who have legal status from applying for extensions or status changes, Leopold said, describing a campaign to \u201cde-legalize\u201d immigrants that is running on \u201csteroids.\u201d<\/p>\n

Immigration lawyers, immigrants, legal scholars and policy experts who spoke to MS NOW described the Trump administration\u2019s approach to immigration as \u201cpunitive,\u201d \u201cunprecedented\u201d and larger in scale than any seen in recent history. Several said it echoed a time when the country instituted racial and ethnic quotas in its immigration policies.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is how you create a shadow population,\u201d said Pratheepan Gulasekaram, a professor of constitutional and immigration law at the University of Colorado Law School. \u201cThis is how you create a population of unlawfully present people in the country who would rather try and spend their time evading enforcement than whatever horrors might await them.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

The sweeping deportation campaign, Gulasekaram said, marks a return to the America of the late 1800s and early 1900s, \u201cwhen the United States was being constructed as a white, and specifically a Northern and Western European, white nation.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

The White House did not respond to questions about comparisons between Trump\u2019s immigration policies and those of past presidents who prioritized white immigrants. \u201cThe Trump Administration continues to lawfully end the egregious abuses to our immigration system that have hurt Americans for years,\u201d said White House spokesperson Abigail Jackson.<\/p>\n

Stephen Miller, the White House deputy chief of staff and architect of Trump\u2019s immigration agenda, has been direct about his goal of effectively halting most immigration, repeatedly framing it as an existential fight for the country. \u201cYou are not just importing individuals,\u201d Miller said last fall. \u201cYou are importing societies. No magic transformation occurs when failed states cross borders. At scale, migrants and their descendants recreate the conditions, and terrors, of their broken homelands.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Impacted<\/strong><\/h2>\n

In his State of the Union address this year, Trump vowed the U.S. \u201cwill always allow people to come in legally, people that will love our country and will work hard to maintain our country.\u201d<\/p>\n

That\u2019s what Viles Dorsainvil did. His TPS status is now gone.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s really paradoxical to know that the country of the free \u2014 the country that has been built with the contribution of immigrants \u2014 [is] now starting a witch hunt to the immigrants,\u201d said Dorsainvil, who is now at risk of deportation. Dorsainvil, executive director of the Haitian Support Center in Springfield, Ohio, said the administration is targeting \u201cimmigrants who came to work, immigrants who came to do good, immigrants who came and contribute[d] to their community \u2026 immigrants who do not have, like, criminal records.\u201d<\/p>\n

Many immigrants who have lost their protections are trying to stay, some by applying for other forms of status. But DHS says it plans to ramp up arrests of former TPS holders and others who recently lost work permits through administration actions.<\/p>\n

On Wednesday, one Haitian immigrant in Springfield was summoned to ICE\u2019s offices in Cincinnati, according to an interpreter for the woman. At check-in, the interpreter said, the woman was given two options upon checking in with a deportation officer: get detained on the spot, or wear an ankle monitor until an upcoming court date one month away.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat we would say now is, \u2018It\u2019s closing time,\u2019 which means you don\u2019t have to go home, but you can\u2019t stay here,\u201d said an unnamed DHS spokesperson in response to a request for comment. \u201cThe good news is it\u2019s not too late to get a $2,600 check and a free flight home.\u201d DHS did not respond to questions about the dangers many immigrants say they would face if returned.<\/p>\n

Larrieux says she plans to stay in the U.S. and fight. As the administration ends TPS for Haitians, she said, \u201cthey are welcoming white South Africans based on lies of persecution in South Africa\u201d \u2014 a reference to Trump\u2019s refugee policy for Afrikaners.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhite people coming, and then you\u2019re kicking out Black people,\u201d Larrieux said. \u201cIt just feels like it\u2019s an ethnic cleansing,\u201d<\/p>\n
