In the spring, as the war with Iran continued to unfold, many U.S. officials expressed concerns about the state of the military\u2019s weapons stockpiles. The New York Times reported in May, for example, \u201cInventories of air-defense missiles, air-launched stealth cruise missiles and Tomahawk missiles have all been greatly reduced because of the war, and will take years to replenish.\u201d<\/p>\n

A month later, MS NOW reported that the conflict had \u201csignificantly depleted the U.S. military\u2019s global munitions supply, causing concern among lawmakers who have demanded more transparency on the status of stockpiles from the Pentagon.\u201d<\/p>\n

As the war crosses the six-month threshold, these concerns are intensifying. The Wall Street Journal reported this week on the United States\u2019 \u201cshrinking stocks of Patriot and other air defense interceptors.\u201d A related Journal report noted that there are growing concerns \u201cabout how many missiles the U.S. military has left,\u201d adding, \u201cThe White House and the Pentagon are pressing defense contractors to speed up this process, but there\u2019s only so much that can be done. Making a missile is a lot more complicated than making a lawn mower.\u201d<\/p>\n

The good news is that Donald Trump and prominent members of his team have had quite a bit to say about the subject in recent days. The bad news is that many of their overlapping stated positions are contradictory.<\/p>\n

Position 1: Everything\u2019s fine.<\/strong> In a written press statement issued by the White House on Monday afternoon, the president was quoted as saying, \u201cWe have far more munitions than anyone in the world, and far more than we need.\u201d<\/p>\n

Position 2: Things could be better.<\/strong> A couple of hours after the White House issued its statement, Trump told reporters during a Q&A on Air Force One that when it comes to certain weapons, such as Patriot missiles, \u201cwe\u2019re in very good shape, but for some of the more sophisticated stuff, we\u2019d certainly like to have more.\u201d<\/p>\n

Position 3: There might be a problem, but everyone should blame Biden.<\/strong> On Monday afternoon, the president said, in reference to U.S. military stockpiles, \u201cPresident Biden gave a lot of it to Ukraine, and so we\u2019re building that up.\u201d U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz, Trump\u2019s former national security adviser, adopted a similar line on NBC News\u2019 \u201cMeet the Press\u201d on Sunday, arguing, \u201cWe have to take a step back here in that a lot of stockpiles were depleted \u2026 from what we gave Ukraine over the last however many years, four or five years.\u201d<\/p>\n

Position 4: Never mind what we just said about stockpiles being depleted.<\/strong> After Waltz told a national television audience that U.S. stockpiles \u201cwere depleted,\u201d host Kristen Welker asked, \u201cBut you acknowledge they\u2019re depleted?\u201d He replied, \u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n

Position 5: We should punish those who disclosed the problem that we\u2019re pretending doesn\u2019t exist.<\/strong> In the same \u201cMeet the Press\u201d interview, Waltz went on to say, \u201cThe U.S. military, and I\u2019ve verified this every which way, has everything that it needs to conduct this campaign as effectively as it needs to be. And I have to just tell you, the people that are leaking this nonsense deserve to be in jail.\u201d<\/p>\n

Left unsaid was a nagging detail. As The New Republic noted, \u201cWaltz couldn\u2019t seem to keep straight whether the reporting was utter \u2018nonsense\u2019 or leaked government information punishable by prison time.\u201d<\/p>\n

So to recap, the depleted stockpiles aren\u2019t depleted, though they could be better, and everyone should blame Trump\u2019s Democratic predecessor for the problem that deserves to be seen as \u201cnonsense.\u201d<\/p>\n

Thank goodness the White House has cleared this up for us.<\/p>\n

That said, on May 1, a reporter asked the president about the state of the U.S. military inventory. The Republican replied, \u201cWe are stocked and locked and loaded. Right now, we have more than double what we had when this started.\u201d<\/p>\n

Team Trump\u2019s talking points are a mess, but at least it had the sense to abandon this self-defeating absurdity.<\/p>\n
