On Saturday, Andrew and Tristan Tate, far-right social media influencers and self-described misogynists who command a following of young, angry men on the internet, were arrested in Miami on rape and sex trafficking charges from the U.K. They will remain in custody in Florida as they fight an extradition request. British authorities say the two brothers face 59 charges between them, including charges of choking and raping women; Andrew Tate also faces charges relating to \u201cindecent images of a child and extreme pornography.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

These charges come on top of a slew of others including a 2022 arrest in Romania on rape and sex trafficking charges, but that case was thrown out on legal and procedural grounds as prosecutors continue to investigate. The brothers have previously denied all wrongdoing.\u00a0<\/p>\n

As the case slogged on, the Tates were allowed to travel to Florida on a private jet. There, they have been hailed as political heroes who helped deliver President Donald Trump the manosphere vote \u2014 that segment of young, disaffected men who crave power, money and domination over women as their American manifest destiny.<\/p>\n

The Tates\u2019 arrest comes days after the president addressed the nation, spinning a conspiracy about imagined voter fraud and nefarious conduct as part of a secret shadow operation of the imagined deep state, but it\u2019s all been a tale told by a fool, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing. Trump released documents purporting to prove his conspiracies \u2014 they did not. (The actual documents that Americans want released are the Epstein files.)<\/p>\n

The smokescreen of conspiracy invented by the president hides a more obvious one\u00a0 \u2014 so obvious it\u2019s not even a conspiracy at all. The real harm is in the justification of the ascendant masculinity that takes what it wants, when it wants. It\u2019s everywhere, with displays of power like fighting matches on the lawn,<\/strong> orders for testosterone screenings for male soldiers and Andrew Tate praising Trump by saying, \u201cHe\u2019s grabbing b\u2013\u2013\u2013\u2013es by the p\u2013\u2013\u2013\u2013. I like that guy.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

As we head into the midterm elections, Republicans and some Democrats\u00a0seem to be eyeing the manosphere as a crucial voting bloc, as some sort of appeal and promise to the ideal of the American everyman. The now disgraced Graham Platner, for example, was heralded as the left\u2019s answer to the manosphere before his downfall. And California Gov. Gavin Newsom, a potential presidential candidate in 2028, has discussed \u201ca crisis of men and masculinity\u201d and tried to appeal to the manosphere crowd and conservative men in general, with moves like hosting far-right pundit Ben Shapiro on his podcast.\u00a0<\/p>\n

But the pandering to this invented idea of the everyman is misguided, when the data shows us that 44.4% of the working class is made up of women. And when appealing to the manosphere involves outright misogyny, you can\u2019t appeal to the \u201cworking class\u201d as a demographic, when you are only appealing to men.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Often this type of dominant masculinity is justified as necessary protection for women, personally and politically. Personally, men are held up as a strong presence to protect women from outside predators. But studies show that the biggest threat to a woman is not some shadowy evil outside, it\u2019s the one in her own home. It seems it\u2019s no different in politics, as scandals that spare no political ideology prove again and again.<\/p>\n

This pervasive toxicity still hasn\u2019t stopped the political class of Americans from wringing their hands about how to appeal to the lonely young men who are in crisis. Meanwhile,\u00a0mortality rates for women in the U.S. are higher than they have been since 1960. One of leading causes of death of pregnant women is homicide, often by an intimate partner.<\/p>\n

Still, we see leaders from both parties courting the manosphere vote \u2014 Newsom chatting with Shapiro, Trump hosting a UFC event with Dana White \u2014 often at the expense and brutalization of women and immigrants, who are the targets of these men\u2019s rhetoric and policies, and who are offered little in the way of protection or justice.<\/p>\n

The Tate brothers\u2019 legal battles are ongoing, and with their ties to the White House, who knows if justice will be done. But what their arrest does is highlight that the ideology they represent is not interested in being saved from itself; it\u2019s unrepentant and continues to see itself as a victim. If the manosphere represents a voting bloc, that\u2019s not very promising.<\/p>\n

But there is a whole cohort of Americans still hoping for change and still hoping for justice. Let\u2019s focus on them.<\/p>\n
