As President Donald Trump\u2019s ceasefire with Iran unravels, Republicans are becoming increasingly worried that a renewed conflict could cause gas prices to spike \u2014 just as voters head to the polls in November.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe should all be focused on the real-world impacts of Iran,\u201d one House Republican told MS NOW on Thursday. \u201cBut if we were looking at the political piece, it\u2019s really bad news for Republicans.\u201d<\/p>\n

This GOP lawmaker noted that a continued war with Iran wouldn\u2019t just push oil prices up, it would also \u201cstrike a blow to the general competence narrative.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI mean, what in the world has Trump been doing?\u201d this Republican asked. \u201cWhy is this going so poorly? And is there any real plan for how to get out?\u201d<\/p>\n

Republicans say they know gas prices \u201cplay a disproportionately large psychological role in elections,\u201d as this lawmaker put it. \u201cThese numbers are two feet tall and posted on every other corner across our towns and cities.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

The lawmaker added that most people don\u2019t know how much they\u2019re paying for many goods. \u201cBut they do know what they\u2019re paying for a gallon of gas,\u201d the lawmaker said. \u201cAnd that is just gonna be a constant reminder that prices are not as low as they were when the president took office.\u201d<\/p>\n

Another House Republican who also spoke to MS NOW on the condition of anonymity said it was \u201cobviously our hope\u201d that the Iran war would be over soon, emphasizing that a resumption of the war would hurt the GOP politically.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe majority of us in Congress, especially Republicans, need him to finish the job quickly,\u201d this member said. \u201cPolitically, it\u2019s damaging, but when you look at it strategically across the globe, I think we need to finish the job.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

And yet another House Republican speculated that gas prices would greatly fluctuate with the \u201con-again, off-again, on-again, off-again\u201d Iran negotiations.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s definitely concerning,\u201d this GOP lawmaker said of rising gas prices. \u201cBut we also see how fast they drop once there\u2019s a sign that we\u2019re gonna find a solution.\u201d<\/p>\n

Privately, most GOP lawmakers are \u201cin the camp of \u2018it\u2019s time to wrap this thing up,\u2019\u201d according to a Republican operative who requested anonymity to speak candidly about conversations between the Hill and the White House.<\/p>\n

This operative added that, publicly, congressional Republicans have been \u201clargely unified\u201d on Iran. But that delicate unity could quickly fall apart if the Iran war resumes and gas prices once again push north of $4 a gallon nationally.<\/p>\n

Sen. Roger Marshall, R-Kans., acknowledged some of that anxiety during a local radio interview this week.<\/p>\n

\u201cCertainly, I think that the midterms will be decided by the price of gasoline in October,\u201d Marshall said. \u201cIf we\u2019re going to do something, we\u2019ve got to rip the bandage off and just go in there.\u201d<\/p>\n

Republicans are keenly aware of the political need for Trump to reach a deal with Iran.<\/p>\n

\u201cWar is inherently unpopular. The longer it goes on, the more unpopular it becomes,\u201d Matthew Barlett, a former State Department appointee in Trump\u2019s first term and now an MS NOW political analyst, said. \u201cForever wars never started as forever wars, and that\u2019s part of the issue.\u201d<\/p>\n

As much as Trump and Republicans want to avoid a \u201cforever war,\u201d however, a seemingly stable situation in Iran has recently been getting rockier.<\/p>\n

The concerns have intensified as negotiations with Iran have stalled and the ceasefire has deteriorated. This week, the U.S. and Iran exchanged fresh strikes, Iran again disrupted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, and Trump declared the ceasefire \u201cover,\u201d raising fears that the conflict could escalate again and further pressure global oil markets.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs far as I\u2019m concerned, it\u2019s just a waste of time dealing with them,\u201d Trump told reporters. \u201cThey\u2019re liars.\u201d<\/p>\n

As the two countries work toward a deal, negotiations have largely stalled \u2014 and the odds of a long-term agreement are winnowing.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not sure I want to make a deal,\u201d Trump said this week. \u201cLet\u2019s just finish the job.\u201d<\/p>\n

Several Republicans argued the president\u2019s public comments are only complicating the negotiations.<\/p>\n

As one former Trump official told MS NOW, every time Trump escalates his rhetoric toward Iran, \u201cyou basically have an economic earthquake here at home.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen the president threatens scorched earth, who all is getting burned?\u201d this official asked. \u201cThe reality is a lot of people are getting burned back home.\u201d<\/p>\n

The former administration official added that anytime Trump speaks about the war, \u201cI think a lot of Republicans wish he didn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n

Fuel prices have come down around 70 cents from their highs in late May, according to AAA\u2019s national average tracker, after prices moderated in the wake of the temporary U.S.-Iran agreement that was signed in June.\u00a0<\/p>\n

But Republicans warn there could be a steep political price to pay in November if prices go back up again.<\/p>\n

As one Republican strategist said in a text message, \u201cthey better keep going down.\u201d<\/p>\n

Of course, not every Republican is so concerned with a renewed standoff with Iran.\u00a0<\/p>\n

While retiring Rep. Don Bacon, R-Neb., acknowledged there could be more pain at the pump as a result of the ceasefire dissolving \u2014 \u201cNobody likes higher gas prices. I don\u2019t like them,\u201d he said \u2014 he also suggested the only way to deal with Iran \u201cis through force.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cAre you gonna let the gas prices determine how we fight this war?\u201d Bacon asked.<\/p>\n

As much as some Republicans are prioritizing making a good deal with Iran rather than a speedy one, Trump and the GOP\u2019s political woes have only been exacerbated by his inconsistent messaging and actions on the economy.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Democrats have seized on Trump\u2019s self-enrichment to argue he\u2019s more focused on his own financial situation than the average American\u2019s, and the White House has consistently struggled to keep Trump on message on the economy, even when the president stands to score obvious political points.<\/p>\n

One of the most recent examples of Trump\u2019s shaky economic rhetoric came two weeks ago, when Trump suddenly canceled a signing ceremony for a bipartisan housing affordability bill. His aides spent the morning promoting the bill and touting its effect on lowering home prices \u2014 only for Trump to say the legislation was \u201cof minor importance\u201d and suggest he may even oppose the measure.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t think he necessarily cares and I don\u2019t think there\u2019s someone who\u2019s going to get him on message,\u201d one of the GOP operatives who spoke to MS NOW said, adding that \u201cnot every time has it mattered either.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cTrump has been around over a decade now in our political world,\u201d the operative said. \u201cThe guy seems to always find a way to figure it out.\u201d<\/p>\n

Still, as the former official said, \u201cin order to win, in order to get the crowd rallying behind you, you need to score points.\u201d<\/p>\n

This person noted that the GOP\u2019s tax cut bill was now a year old. And continuing to tout that legislation \u2014 particularly when recent polls show the law\u2019s popularity is 15 points underwater \u2014 may only get Republicans so far.<\/p>\n
