New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani\u2019s speech to commemorate the country\u2019s 250th anniversary laid waste to the MAGA movement\u2019s bigoted worldview.<\/p>\n

It was a speech very reminiscent of Barack Obama and Frederick Douglass, in that Mamdani expressed pride in the nation\u2019s founding principles \u2014 as laid out in America\u2019s founding documents, at least \u2014 but also frustration over the prejudice that has been, and continues to be, promoted by people in power.<\/p>\n

Flanked on Friday by newly naturalized American citizens, and from behind a desk used by George Washington, Mamdani rebuked the hypocrisy of immigrants being demonized in a nation built by immigrants and enslaved people: \u201cAs we mark 250 years, what do we see? We see a city of contradictions within a nation of contradictions.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mamdani denounced what he framed as influential oligarchs and the federal immigration agents involved in President Donald Trump\u2019s racist anti-immigrant crackdown:<\/p>\n

We see the wealthiest country in the history of the world \u2014 one where children go to sleep hungry while the world\u2019s first trillionaire hungers for more. We see monopolies that dominate every industry and oligarchs who buy elections. We see masked agents terrorizing our streets, eating food cooked by our undocumented neighbors before spiriting them away in unmarked vans. We see a nation whose immense wealth has been built by those with calloused, dirt-streaked hands \u2014 those who toil on factory floors and chisel into stone. And we see a nation that has allowed so much of that wealth to be held instead in the soft hands of a precious few.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Mamdani said immigrants to the United States \u2014 including Jewish people escaping pogroms, Italians fleeing poverty and Syrians in search of economic opportunity \u2014 couldn\u2019t predict \u201cthe nativism they would face\u201d and the discrimination they\u2019d experience, but he touted their belief in what the country could <\/em>be.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo matter how much smog hung over the harbor, they still saw an opportunity to begin anew,\u201d he said. \u201cOver the years that followed, despite laws enacted by the federal government to bar their entry, despite sweatshop fires that killed hundreds of women, despite riots aimed at their very existence, immigrants made homes here in New York City. And they helped to make New York City.\u201d<\/p>\n

The mayor also urged Americans to rethink the definition of \u201cAmerican exceptionalism.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAmerican exceptionalism \u2014 the conventional wisdom tells us \u2014makes our freedom a little more free,\u201d he argued, adding: \u201cAnd yet the irony is that the story of America has so often been written by those who were told by others with power and influence and wealth that they were anything but exceptional.\u201d<\/p>\n

In a possible reference to racist remarks from Trump in 2015, the mayor said that \u201cfor generation after generation, we have been told that when the world has sent its people to our shores, it has not sent its best.\u201d<\/p>\n

And although Mamdani said powerful people have shown that they see the U.S. as an \u201carena of supremacy, where only a select few are allowed freedom,\u201d he argued that the true deciders of the nation\u2019s fate \u2014 and the shepherds of its founding principles \u2014 are everyday Americans, like those standing at his side.<\/p>\n

\u201cThose ideals upon which our nation was built \u2014 they are strong enough to endure any authoritarian regime, but only if we reach for them,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
